The Story of "Keep Calm and Carry On"

Two things about this video. Firstly, I've seen the "Keep Calm and Carry On" signs and posters all over the place as of late, but until I watched this video earlier today I had no idea what kind of historical significance the message carried. I'm sure I'm in the minority on recently gaining this bit of knowledge, but if you too don't know the back story, you've got to watch this short video. It's a lovely and inspiring story. Secondly, this bookstore from which the sign was rediscovered, Barter Books, looks like heaven on earth. I'm not sure I've seen a more magical looking bookstore in my existence. It's no wonder it was named one of the 20 most beautiful bookstores in the world. I'm thinking this place might have to go on my bucket list.

Have you been to Barter Books? What did you think? After tweeting this video earlier, Ana directed me toward her post that details her visit there. So jealous!

  1. I used to live near Barter Books and went there a few times. It is an amazing place, but I have to admit that the size intimidated me a bit. There is just so much to see that I was overwhelmed and flitted around never really sure what to look at. I don't think I ever bought a book from there. I think my problem might have been going there with non book lovers who weren't interested in spending hours there. Next time I'll ensure I go on my own and make the time to browse slowly.

    1. Your right, going to a bookstore that big you need to either go by yourself or with someone who loves to browse for a couple hours. I hope you enjoy yourself more next time!

  2. Brenna!
That is such a wonderful video. I'll admit that I was also ignorant of its origin, so thanks for sharing! I really did love the video. And how incredibly cozy did that look?! I must go there the next time I visit England. Field trip!!! I could stay for hours.

  4. That is the ultimate dream bookstore- it has a magical feel to it (from the pictures and video- I've never been, but now it's on my "to-visit" list).
I recall hearing about its origin (the poster's) sometime, but had forgotten. I'm glad to be reminded of its historical importance!

  5. I knew the general story about the poster, but I didn't know anything about the bookstore it was found in. That is awesome! I will absolutely have to visit that place one day. Gorgeous. It combines to of my loves, old train stations and book stores.
