RIP VII: It's Here!

You guys! RIP is back! Which means my favorite season is upon us! I know every year around this time I gush about Fall but I can't help it! After a long, hot summer I just love the crisp air, apple picking, scarves, leaves... the list goes on!

Anyhow, RIP. It starts September 1st and ends October 31st. To participate, you can read books that fall in the genre of: mystery, suspense, thriller, dark fantasy, Gothic, horror and supernatural. As always, there are multiple perils. This year, since I am a bit behind in my other challenges and I have a few ARC's headed my way that I'm really excited about, I am going to participate in Peril the Second:

Read two books, any length, that you feel fit (my very broad definitions) of R.I.P. literature. It could be Stephen King or Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Ian Fleming or Edgar Allan Poe…or anyone in between.

If you're interested in reading brief reviews of the books I read for RIP last year, you can find that here. The books I read this year will most likely come from the list below.
  • Rebecca, Daphne DuMarier
  • The Gun Slinger, Stephen King
  • The Big Sleep, Raymond Chandler
  • The Thirteenth Tale, Diane Setterfield
  • Case Histories, Kate Atkinson
  • The Eyre Affair, Jasper Fford
  • Something Wicked This Way Comes, Ray Bradbury
  • We Have Always Lived In the Castle, Shirley Jackson
  • In The Woods, Tana French

  1. I am also a lover of fall! From your list I heartily recommend the Thirteenth Tale -- it was one of my favorite reads last October. :)

  2. The Gunslinger, The Gunslinger! It is quite a commitment reading The Dark Tower though, so... be prepared! :) Rebecca is also excellent, and definitely RIP-ish.

    1. How many books are in the Dark Tower series? I was thinking of reading at least the first one and if I love it, reading the next and so on. It seems less daunting than saying yeah I'll read the whole thing.

    2. Ah hah! I had posed anonymusly in regards to Paul Auster - who knew I already was logged in!? There are seven books in the main Dark Tower series, but King just released in April I believe an eighth book called the Wind in the Keyhole which was fairly enjoyable and, if I remember correctly, would have come in somewhere between books 5 and 6. The series is quite good but I would warn that while the first four or five books are outstanding, the series starts to unravel a bit in the last two books. Book four was definitely my favorite. The Gunslinger is really great though and leaves one with a some powerful and lasting imagery.

  4. Yes, Rebecca and The Thirteenth Tale!! Read those two definitely, don't delay! I loved them both so much! I love the RIP time, I'm already diving into another Du Maurier with My Cousin Rachel in audio format, and it's marvelous.

Of course, any Stephen King is a good one!! I'm participating in the IT readalong that just started and it's wonderful!

  7. I'm sure you wouldn't be surprised if I were to push In the Woods, so I'm doing in DO IT, BRENNA. Seriously. And if you hate it, be nice! Haha.
I tried reading Shirley Jackson's title and just could not get into it. Very weird. Although it could have been a timing issue. I've had Case Histories for about two years now and still didn't even think to include it.
I didn't even think about Rebecca! Ok, I'm just rambling now. Hope you enjoy!

I'm way behind for the year and do not anticipate catching up.. next year?!? Haha. Happy reading!

    1. I'm pretty sure I've had In The Woods listed on my RIP list for the last two years, so hopefully this year will be my year! Also, on challenges, I'm not super behind but behind enough where I have to question if I'll finish. I could if I really tired, but I'm having so much fun reading what I want to read in the moment and not picking up what I think I should be reading, so I may just keep that up :)

    2. To butt in, I don't know if I've tried this yet. I'm thinking maybe, but maybe not. I'll be on the lookout. Pumpkin beer is the BEST.

    3. I want to say we talked about this last year and you did try it but told me you liked this jack o'lantern pumpkin beer better. I forget what is was called but the bottle was black and orange with a picture of a jack o'lantern. I've been keeping an eye out for it with no luck. Either way, PUMPKIN BEER FUCK YEAH!

  11. I'm reading We Have Always Lived in the Castle too! So excited about that one. I've heard great things. I have Case Histories on my list too, but I have so many others ahead of it, I'm not sure I will get to it before the end of October.

I hope you enjoy Rebecca. It's fantastic!

  12. I'm very much throwing in my vote for The Thirteenth Tale as it is one of my most favorite gothic stories. Rebecca is great as is We Have Always Lived in the Castle. Your list looks fantastic.

I too gush about this time of year, its hard not to when I am so passionate about the season. As I sit here typing this we are just a few hours away from attending our small town's annual Fall Festival. The weather now is 69 degrees, so it will be nice and cool out tonight as we walk around eating fair food and people watching. Can't wait!

Wonderful to have you imbibing peril with us this year.

  13. I loved CASE HISTORIES and the two followup Jackson Brodie books. IN THE WOODS is also a wonderful book. I'd like to recommend THE SNOWMAN by Jo Nesbo and THE ICE PRINCESS by Camilla Lackberg, too - both Scandinavian writers who really fit into RIP VII.
