Margaret Atwood Writes Like Stephen King?

A few days ago I posted a link to the now viral I Write Like, a tool that lets you paste a few paragraphs of writing and then determines which author you write like.

It turns out that because of the sites popularity, successful authors have used the site to see who they write like. The results? The site isn't quite accurate (which became apparent when my results were Nabokov). Apparently Margaret Atwood writes like Stephen King, to which she responded via Twitter:

According to the I Write Like analysis, I write like... Ta da! Stephen King! http://bit.ly/bBCMB3 Who knew?Lady Gaga's Alejandro lyrics are considered Shakespearean, but we already knew her lyrics are "incredibly literary". Clearly the site is just for fun, but I wonder how Margaret Atwood felt when Mel Gibson's rant to his ex was imputed and she was the result.

  1. Apparently my academic articles are in the style of both H.P. Lovecraft and David Foster Wallace. My blog posts match up with Cory Doctorow and Kurt Vonnegut.

    I'll take it.

  3. I tired five of my blog posts-one was like cory doctorow, one Dickens, one Joyce, one Lovecraft and one Dan Brown-I think this is a scam for their writing lessons!

  4. @Mel - well, of course it's a scam. I had four different writers come up.

  6. So much fun! Apparently I write like Cory Doctorow. Never even heard of him! The next blog post I did was James Joyce.

  7. I love Atwood and I enjoy Stephen King - so I think its pretty interesting that her result was him. Hmmm. They both can be rather dark. Not sure she would like the Gibson rant being considered Atwoodish - I know I wouldn't like it. Oh well, its definitely a fun site!

  8. I gave up on that damn thing after it told me I write like Dan Brown - that was almost enough to send me off on a week-long bender.

  9. Greg - That is too funny. I would feel the same way. I hate Dan Brown with a serious passion. I think a week-long bender would be justified. Or at least a couple of days :)

  10. Yep. It's truly a scam. I forgot the first writer it told me I write like. But the second and third times, it told me I write like David Foster Wallace! What's funny is I'm currently listening to the audiobook of The Broom of the System. It's hilarious! Both the book and the "I Write Like" site. Have a great weekend.
