Reading in Review: May

May was a little slow in the reading department, probably because real life got in the way. But that didn't hold me back too much, as I finished four novels, two of which were Pulitzers.

Books read: 4

Brooklyn by Colm Tóibín
Middlesex by Jeffery Eugenides
84, Charing Road by Helene Hanff
A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan (review coming soon)

Favorite May read: Middlesex

Normally I break down the stats of my monthly reading, but since it was a slower month I'll just say my May reading was largely American authors (save Tóibín) and not very diverse (all were white). I'm going to work on diversifying my June reading.

In a related not, I've got 30 days to finish the Classics Challenge, in which I have two books (of eight) left to read; Little Women (to satisfy the YA Classic) and a reread from college or high school, TBD. I'm confident I can finish on time, although I bought a slew or books in May that I am dying to open.

  1. I don't consider a book a week slow at all! That would be very productive month for myself.

I found it interesting that your favorite book of May was Middlesex. I read it a year or two ago and just didn't understand the Oprah hype. I'll have to read your review and discover what I missed.

  2. I think finishing up two Pulitzers makes up for any reading slow down you may have felt like you had. Can't wait to see your review of Goon Squad. I have that on my TBR list as soon as I finish with my reading challenge month!

  3. I love the photo of the suitcase full of books! I wish I could get a closer look. I also loved Middlesex. I think those were pretty weighty books, so one per week is still an accomplishment. I look forward to your classics reviews. I haven't read Little Women since I was about 12, I should really reread it sometime.

  4. I loved Middlesex too. A book a week seems to be my average rate when I'm working but I do speed up in the summer.

Did you enjoy Brooklyn? I haven't read any Colm Toibin.

  5. Whitney, I should be happy with 4, it just feels slow.

Red, I'm hoping to write my review today!

Karen K, If you click on the image it should go to a larger version. Or check out the link at the bottom to BookLover. Also, can you believe this will be my first time reading Little Women?

Tiny Library, I didn't love Brooklyn. You can find my review under "The Books" tab.

  6. I think you're doing pretty good. I'm just going to have to submit to a year for completion. There's no way I can finish The Jungle and the 3 other books I have left in order to finish by the end of June. Good luck!

  7. May was a slower than usual month for me as well, and I even took a blogging break during it! And right now I’m reading a pretty hefty book which will take longer than usual to finish. Ah well!

Nice to hear you liked Middlesex. I’ve been going back and forth on whether or not to put that in my TBR pile…

  8. I loved Middlesex and liked Brooklyn; you had a fine month.

  9. Lots of people have been saying they've been kinda slow with books this month. I think I read 3, and then half of Middlemarch (400 pages)!

Looks like you got through a good selection though!

  10. Totally didn't realize the Classics Challenge is over at the end of June. I better get a move on. Yikes! I have three, possibly four, books to read to finish it.

  11. Beth, That's cool she did extend it. I'm just trying to finish by June so I don't have it hanging over my head for the entire year.

Illevinso, Put in on your TBR! Put it on!

Diane, I didn't love Brooklyn, but Middlesex was fantastic.

Bethany, I LOVE Middlemarch. It's probably my very favorite classic. I hope you are enjoying it!

She, The Classics Challenge was extended to December a few months into the challenge. I'm just trying to stick to the original end date so I can read whatever I want for the rest of the year.
